De Toren The Black Lion Shiraz 2023 Per Bottle

The Black Lion is De Toren's ultra-premium 100% Shiraz and is often described as the most luxurious Shiraz made in South Africa. Only about 1,000 to 1,300 bottles are produced each year. Each bottle is labelled and numbered by hand and comes in a handcrafted black wooden case with the estate's signature key, which makes it a true collector's piece.

Tasting Notes

The wine is deep ruby and opulent. Blackberry, black cherry and plum are layered with baking spice, cedar, cigar box and black pepper. The palate is full-bodied and powerful but elegant, with velvety, well-integrated tannins and a long, evolving finish.

Vineyards & Maturation

The fruit comes from selected low-yielding vines across three sites. Swartland gives power, while Helderberg and Polkadraai in Stellenbosch give elegance. The wine is fermented and aged in "200% new French oak", meaning it moves from one set of new barrels into a second set of new barrels.

Serving & Cellaring

Decant for at least an hour and serve at 15–18°C with simply prepared, well-marbled aged steak. It has ageing potential of up to 40 years.
