Description
De Toren Patronus 2022 is the estate's ultra-premium 100% Malbec, made to be one of the finest expressions of the variety anywhere. The name is Latin for "patron" and reflects De Toren's commitment to sustainability and to protecting nature, which is why a rhino appears on the label. Production is tiny: the maiden release of just 809 bottles sold out within four weeks.
Tasting Notes
The wine is a deep, inky purple. It opens with cedar and a hint of pencil shavings, then ripe blackberry, plum and cherry, with violets, black pepper, clove and a touch of vanilla. The palate is full-bodied and vibrant, with dark fruit, spice and minerality held together by tightly knit, silky tannins. Fresh acidity carries it to a long, fragrant finish.
Vineyards & Winemaking
The grapes come from decades-old, sustainably farmed Malbec vines in the Polkadraai Hills, Stellenbosch, and are hand-harvested at peak ripeness. The wine is fermented in a mix of closed barrels, open oak barrels and small open stainless-steel tanks, then matured for 18 months in French oak.

Serving & Cellaring
Decant for at least an hour and serve at 15–18°C, ideally with a tender grilled steak. It is delicious now and can be cellared for up to 40 years.
