Description
Book XVII is one of De Toren's icon wines and one of the most highly regarded ultra-premium reds in South Africa. It takes its name from Book XVII of Pliny the Elder's Natural History, one of the earliest texts devoted to wine and viticulture. It was first released with the 2010 vintage and reflects decades of detailed vineyard research. Each bottle is numbered by hand and presented in a handcrafted wooden case.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a fine balance of dark and red fruit: blackberry, black cherry, cassis and plum, lifted by violets, cedar, sweet spice and vanilla. It is powerful yet silky, with plush spice, delicate minerality and remarkable purity through a long, luxurious finish.
Blend & Maturation
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Malbec (the 2023 is 60/20/20). It matures for 22 months in 100% new French oak in a climatised cellar. The 2023 vintage filled only five barrels.
Serving & Cellaring
Decant for at least an hour and serve at 15–18°C alongside roasted red meats. It will cellar beautifully for 15–20+ years.
