Yields were up on 2019. Spring through to midsummer was warm and dry, with ripeness across the board being achieved easily. Winter rains arrived a early which hurried the harvesting of the Cabernet Sauvignon slightly. The 2020 Chronicle is Merlot driven (45%) with the balance made up of Syrah, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon. Vineyard 17 vineyard blocks over 55 hectares and 8 soil types. The vines vary in age, from 10 to 26 years old. The soils near the top of the estate are shallow and very well drained where the lower slopes tend to have deeper, richer soils. This variation in terroir and varieties, and combination thereof, result in a unique, complex wine.

Cellar: All blocks are harvested and vinified separately. The only constants were fermentation in stainless steel and no malolactic fermentation - thus capturing the purity and brightness of the Semillon fruit. A blend of these components was meticulously crafted to showcase what we believe is an incredibly exciting future for Franschhoek Semillon.

Drink now or cellar for 6-10 years. Verdelho adds the zing and zest to this blend, giving it that extra twist of freshness, energy, and rhythm. The Chenin blanc grapes come from 41-year old, dry land farmed bush vines in the Paardeberg. Swartland. The Verdelho grapes come from Voor-Paardeberg, grown in decomposed granite and clay as well as a vineyard in Bot River grown in Bokkeveld shale. The decomposed granite soils produce a rich, generous, and broader palate, while the shale and clay soil from Bot River produces an austere, focused, and texture-driven wine. A combination of these two regions, together with the Verdelho that adds the freshness, combine to create a well-balanced wine, both rich and generous and elegant and well-poised, with a mineral focus and bright acidity.

Tasting Note
A full and textured vintage showing fresh lime leaf and yellow kumquat aromas and a palate that sets tropical notes like banana and tinned pineapple against a mouth-watering saline acidity that recalls preserved lemons.
